Trigeminal Neuralgia
Dr. Kamath has specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) a rare but painful condition that affects 1-2 in 10,000 people in the United States.
TN causes sudden, sharp, shock-like pains on one side of the face; the pain can involve the area under the eye, side of nose, cheek, or jaw. The pain is commonly triggered by eating, chewing, brushing teeth, or sometimes with no trigger at all. It is a debilitating condition that can significantly impact quality of life.
Treatment for trigeminal neuralgia starts with medications. Over time, TN often progresses and medications no longer adequately treat the pain, or cause bothersome side effects; at this point, it’s time to consider a procedural option.
There are several procedures for treating TN, including microvascular decompression, percutaneous rhizotomy, and radiation. The right choice of treatment depends on a detailed conversation with your surgeon.
