Spinal Tumor

Spinal Tumor

Spinal tumors are abnormal growths in or around the spine. They can cause a variety of symptoms based on their size and location. These symptoms may include arm or leg pain, numbness, weakness, tingling, or bowel or bladder changes. Some tumors may cause no symptoms at all.

The treatment for a spinal tumor varies based on your medical history, symptoms (if any), physical exam, and imaging findings. Since there are dozens of types of spinal tumors, a biopsy is sometimes necessary to determine the tumor type and the appropriate treatment. Sometimes, surgery such as a laminectomy or spinal fusion is needed to remove a tumor; in other situations, tumors may be treated with medications, radiation, or simply observation over time.
