Laminectomy

A laminectomy is a spine surgery commonly done to decompress the spinal cord and nerve roots, as in cases of spondylosis or herniated discs. It is also performed to access the spinal cord and surrounding structures for other reasons, such as biopsy or tumor removal.

Laminectomy involves drilling off the “roof” of bone above the spinal cord and nerves. In the case of a pinched nerve, this relieves the pressure on the nerve, allowing it more room and alleviating pain.

Laminectomy can be done on one level of the spine, or on several levels of the spine. Expectations around surgery, length of stay, and other specifics should be discussed in detail with your surgeon.
